Scrum Talk Daily - # 8
Scrum Core Values # 3 - Openness

"The Scrum Team and its stakeholders are open about the work and the challenges."

What does this mean?

To me, this single sentence is all about putting your ego on the shelf and being open with the fact that you are not a perfect being.

We all have strengths. We love to play those up. We sell ourselves constantly. What about saying "I need help", or "I don't know how to do this"? What about "Well, that didn't work"? Or "I guess I screwed that up"?

On the flip side, self-advocating falls under being open as well. Being open about the way a teammate, stakeholder, or manager is communicating with us is exercising Openness.

What about bringing up the elephant in the room?

Being open isn't always a "me-facing" endeavor. Sometimes the value is about bringing something out into the open so a dialogue can begin.

When have you exercised Openness? Has bringing up the elephant in the room ever steered your team in the right direction?
