Scrum Artifacts # 1 - The Product Backlog
The first Scrum Artifact is the Product Backlog. This is an emergent, ordered list of what is needed to improve the product and the single source of work undertaken by the Scrum Team.
Artifacts have a commitment. The commitment for the product backlog is the Product Goal, a future state of the product that serves as a target for the Scrum Team. The team must fulfill (or abandon) this objective before taking on the next.
Product Backlog items that can meet the Definition of Done by the Scrum Team within one Sprint are deemed ready for selection during Sprint Planning.
This degree of transparency comes after Product Backlog Refinement, which is the act of breaking down Product Backlog items into smaller more precise items by the Developers who will be doing the work.
The Product Owner may influence the Developers by helping them understand and select trade-offs.
Are you on a team that's working on a product without a clear Product Goal? What is your team's process for Backlog Refinement?
